If, by April, you haven't booked a getaway, you can always arrange a last minute holiday, as you can be just about certain of perfect weather. If you’re taking a family holiday, it’s worth noting that there is a cooling wind called ‘the Meltemi’ which can make you feel as though you can stay out in the heat for longer, so make sure you have plenty of sun cream for everyone, but especially for children. In Bodrum, it’s likely that you’ll spend a lot of time on the beach; which one you choose depends on what you want from your holiday. If you’re looking for a lively beach with water sports available, you should head to Gumbet’s long beach, which is edged with bars, restaurants and hotels which offer free use of both sun beds and parasols for customers as long as they’re still buying drinks. That sounds like a good excuse for enjoying a glass of wine.

Some people would prefer to lounge in the sun, rather than jet-skiing or diving and Bodrum has several resorts that would suit them perfectly. Not far from Gumbet is Bitez, which is scented by the mandarin trees that are all over the area. The beach is very peaceful, whilst still being generously served by bars, restaurants and cafés. Although there are areas of shingle as well as sand, it’s a great beach for families as it doesn’t get too busy for children to be able to run around and there are regular boat-trips to nearby coves. The town of Bitez retains an old-fashioned character, with an authentic Turkish teahouse and shops that stock a good range of souvenirs, as well as the ubiquitous bars and restaurants
